MINNE MUZTUCCARI

...continuing her journey through the fashion industry

My collection is based on the idea of being a spy, as well as on “The Lost Man”, which explores the associations of being lost and how someone would survive. Through my research I came across a drawing which was an interpretation by Marcus Sedwigwick on the author Arthur Ransome, who was also a spy. Sedwigwick’s children’s book called “Swallows and Amazons” is one of the most influential books for children; however the beautiful illustration which I found was based on Ransome’s life and books as a whole.

Following aspects of terror and scared elements within the research, I also came to think of obvious things such as compasses as another way of helping a person survive. Just think of a guy who has no access to any technology while being lost – he wants to explore the potentials within his mind, while also exploring new areas and backgrounds on his travels. Through all my research there was still the desirable secrecy of linking to the spy image.

Within the collection some garments have an inverted pleat either at the front of the garments or at the back, giving a hidden aspect within the pieces. In addition to the pleats, panels were placed on the shoulder of the jackets, giving the illusion of protection. This unique design feature is used throughout most of my garments. There is also the aspect of two of everything, for example two hoods on one garment, giving the illusion of two sleeves on the shoulders of every piece. My choice of fabrics is a mixture of different weight jerseys, some of which I dyed to match my woven fabrics.

One coat was made out of heavy boiled wool which had a beautiful texture. My shirts are all light cottons and for the cranberry shirt I placed some of the wool fabrics on the shoulders, providing the piece with various balances of fabrics. I was never able to visually see my final collection, or see the final turn out, but from seeing it all together on models and in motion, I was blown away with what I was able to achieve. You do forget how much detail and work you put in to each garment and with my pieces, every one of them tells a story!

Minne is a fashion designer today, because...
I’ve always been a very creative person, fascinated by fabrics, colour and other art medias at such a young age. My grandmother is a talented dressmaker and when I was little she would let me pick up pins with her magnet and do seams on scraps she had.

If Minne would not have become a designer, she would be...
I believe I would have been involved with something creative like an illustrator or stylist, but still keeping in touch with the fashion world.

Minne spent her life school years...
Understanding fashion, and expanding my creative path with art and textiles.

Minne’s friends think...
They believe in me. Understand that I have a unique take on menswear and that fashion will always be apart of my life.

When Minne was a teenager, she dreamed of being...
Healthy and happy in my life!

She knew she would become a fashion designer when...
When I was 17 in my second year of my BTEC Fashion And Clothing, I realised I was capable and proud of what I could produce by continuing my career in fashion.

She would never...
Forget my cultural background that has made me who I am today.

Minne gets inspired by...
My own surroundings: art, culture and music.

The defining moment in her career was...
When I was chosen to open the show for my university at Graduate Fashion Week. I was shocked when I was told but most importantly I was proud and felt like I had really achieved what I wanted to achieve at this stage in my life, and I was able to make my family proud!

For a day, Minne would like to be...
Assisting Vivienne Westwood with her designs for her new menswear range and accepting any free gifts she will be willing to give!

In 10 years from now, Minne would like to see herself...
I see myself working for a high end fashion menswear company designing edgy and creative garments.

If Minne ruled the world, she would...
Love to stop all wars and political feuds and let everyone live a better life and be free.

Minne would describe her personality as...
Calm, easy going and a positive thinker. Passionate in what she does and with a drive to continue her journey through the fashion industry.

Minne wishes the next Minne...
Work to your very best because you always get what you put in! All the best!

If she could live her life again...
I would have pushed myself further within the fashion industry when I was younger, and would have believed in myself a lot more.
