Howitzweissbach

...wishing us all "Guten Tag"

Polite. A little reserved. Unmistakably German. With “GUTEN TAG” the label howitzweissbach introduces its first ready-to-wear collection at Paris Fashion Week. Eva Howitz and Frieder Weissbach, two fashion designers from Leipzig, have deliberately chosen an international setting for their start up.

“EINS (ONE) is for our first collection,” says Eva Howitz. “THE GAME simply echoes the way that the final pieces were created.” For, at first, two collections existed, each created by one of the two designers. The question of how the different pieces would be combined and which designer would be providing which pieces was decided by the roll of a dice. Through this process new and independent garments were created to form a new, single collection. During this process classical lines disappeared; a sleeve turned into a collar, a trouser leg became a new kind of sleeve.

“We went to different fabric fairs with the aim to find strong colours that we could make our own, that would be independent from the currently dominating trend,” says Frieder Weissbach. “What we had in mind were the wooden toys from our childhood, building blocks in primary colours that were strong but also worn.” Production takes place locally in the area around Leipzig and further away in Saxony. Outerwear is made in Jahnsdorf/Erzgebirge. Shoes are produced in Weissenfels, which used to be one of Germany’s major centres of shoe production before the collapse of the GDR. The hand-sewn socks come from Krumhermersdorf. It’s no coincidence that many of the chosen suppliers are found in the Erzgebirge.

The region has a textile manufacturing tradition that reaches back centuries. That local manufacturers benefit from this is a good thing, they both believe. “It was sad to see that in so many places we visited, businesses that used to employ thousands of workers had shrunk to ten employees. And yet we found all the producers we needed for our models right there.”

Fair and open cooperation with suppliers and artists has been close to the heart of howitzweissbach from the beginning. “We are very self-confident, but we do not want to dictate the way others should work. We see our partners as equals,” says Eva Howitz. “If we pick a photographer, it is because we appreciate her or his work as much as our own.”

It is the aim of designers Eva Howitz and Frieder Weissbach to realise their brave and individual designs in their collections and to clothe customers from around the world in quality Made in Germany. Their pieces are defined by new colours that are independent from the dictate of trends and unconventional lines and cuts. In their own words: "We want to create pieces that are unmistakably howitzweissbach, which will still be easily recognisable as such in ten years' time.“

Nothing inspires us like...
The last seconds before sleeping and the first seconds after waking up.

We hope...
That Karl is not the last fashion export from Germany.

Cultural influences...
For us are everything from Saxon regional traditions, national German folk art to the outer, more international, worldwide cosmos.

We got where we are...
So far with a good portion of self-belief, but this is definitely not the end. The real answer to this question will be given in five years' time.

Fashion can sometimes...
Be more tasteless than the appetisers of an after-show buffet and often less exciting than the goody bags in the front row.

We sense...
A lot!

We scream when...
Don't scream!!! Stop your drama! Go on!

Money makes...
Sated in measure, fat in profusion.

Did you know...
That we have a button and needle phobia? But we are undergoing medical treatment. And, by the way, Salvador Dali designed the Chupa Chups logo!

We dance like...
Baby and Jonny, even with the lift.

Faith in...
HowitzWeissbach. Amen!

Cake makes me...
Tschilp, tschilp. Bon appetit, have a nice meal, get fat!

If we could...
Make it happen, our first show would take place on the sunny side of the moon, with Juri Gagarin sitting in the front row. Our models would wear heavy lead nail polish to keep them on the ground and the champagne would be flying around in bubbles. Pictures available at Nasa.com, show music Mike Oldfield – Moonlight Shadow. A small step for HowitzWeissbach, a giant leap for mankind.

Our vice is...
“Amor Fati“

NYC/London/Paris/Milan are...
Leipzig: "Leipzig, I am fond of indeed! It is a little Paris and educates its people." (J.W. Goethe)

We are perfectionists...
Yes. We are Germans!

We've been Bhuddists...
Since our reincarnation as silkworms in the early 20th century.

We love getting older...
Because we love wrinkles, hanging tits, varices... it’s so in fashion on the moon!
