DAVID LONGSHAW

...writing, illustrating and designing fashion

David Longshaw studied Fashion Design Womenswear (BA hons) at Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design, graduating in 2005. His graduate collection was selected for the Saint Martins press show and won the Cove Park residency prize. His portfolio also won the Colin Barnes Drawing Prize. From Saint Martins, David went on to the Royal College of Art (studying Fashion Design Womenswear MA). His MA graduate collection was selected for the finals of ITS#6 (Trieste) and Le Vif Weekend (Belgium). Before showing his MA collection, David had been asked by Alberta Ferretti to design for her, so after graduation he moved to Italy and worked on her Alberta Ferretti and Philosophy catwalk lines. David then went on to design for Max Mara (in Italy) before returning to England to launch his own label. David was selected to exhibit as part of February 2010's London Fashion Week at Somerset House and for the "Ones To Watch" catwalk show at Vauxhall Fashion Scout. David also writes and illustrates for a number of publications including "The Daily", London Fashion Week newspaper, "The End", "Disorder Magazine" and "TANK magazine".

Nothing inspires me like…
Writing a story. My collections are often based on stories I write and illustrate. They inform the design, colour and mood of the collection. My London Fashion Week collection was entitled "Escaping Emily" and was about the plight of a puppet tormented by a deranged fashion designer.

I hope…
That Manchester City get fourth place this season so they will be in the European Cup next season. I hope Sale Rugby club don’t get relegated. I hope that I have something tasty for dinner tonight.

Cultural influences…
I’m massively influenced by celebrity-led fashion labels particularly Lindsay Lohan’s leggings label and tanning range, for me there aren’t enough of these crossovers. On a less serious note, I would say Alan Bennett, Paula Rego and Ron Mueck.

I got where I am...
By having sleep as a low priority and being a determined bastard.

Fashion can sometimes...
Be an amazing vehicle for creativity and sometimes be very disturbing, like when people think it’s fashionable and acceptable to wear UGG boots or those damn Crocks.

Money makes…
More dresses and fabric mice (Maude and her fabric friends who I’ve photographed for different fashion magazines and have appeared in Disorder Magazine and on the front pages of LFW paper and on Vogue.com).The more money I have, the more stuff I can make.

Did you know…
That jam and ham make for a delightful sandwich filling.

Love now because…
You’re a long time dead.

If I could…
Have a few more hours in the day, life would be easier. There are always too many things I want to make, design, draw or write about.

I have never…
Been involved in New York or Paris Fashion Week but one day I’d like to. I’ve been involved in Milan Fashion Week when I designed for Alberta Ferretti and in London under my own label.

My future is…
Developing my own label and collaborating with others. I’m working on a few collaborations at the moment including one with scarf designer Dominique Mosley.

There's a new...
Designer called Kirsty Ward, who made some amazing jewellery for my last collection.

The earliest memory...
I have of what job I wanted when I was older was to either be a fashion designer or a rugby player.

I like making...
Things. From fashion to characters. I love the process of fannying around with fabric and patterns.

I wouldn't want...
To ever stop being creative. It’s something I need to do.
