Condé Nast Design Awards 2010
This year's panel was comprised of experts from the arts, science, technology and media who created shortlists packed with the very best selection of innovation and design ideas from around the world. Key figures and opinion leaders such as Sir Nicholas Serota, Director of Tate Britain, John Thackara, founder of the Netherlands Design Institute as well as the Rector of the Royal College of Art, Paul Thompson were among the judges.
Most influential journalists were also among the ones selecting design and innovation ideas that “will shape our future”: Marion Hume who writes for the Australian Financial Review, US Vogue, Time and the FT and is also involved in trade projects to use fashion as a way out of poverty; Fiona Lintott, Condé Nast Traveller's Executive Fashion and Beauty Editor; David Rowan, the UK editor of Wired magazine, Jason Barlow, one of the UK's most influential motoring journalists, editor-at-large for BBC Top Gear, contributing editor at GQ, and writes for the Sunday Times, as well as travel journalists Nicole Bellamy, Peter Hall and Simon Caller, who is the UK's leading travel commentator, a contributing editor to Condé Nast Traveller, presenter of LBC's Travel Clinic and senior travel editor at the Independent.
As Condé Nast say: “Some people travel simply to enjoy sunshine, sea and sand, some for cultural or culinary adventures; others choose to focus on seeing the world's natural wonders. Regardless of where and why you travel, the experience is enhanced by design and innovative thinking: applied to airplanes, trains, museums and restaurants, the shops we seek out, the gadgets we tap on or tune into.”
The online shop at NJAL is nominated in the ‘Retail’ category, which highlights this year’s most innovative new business projects launched in the retail industry.
NOT JUST A LABEL's shop is a fresh online concept providing access to unobtainable designer pieces from a wide selection of fashion brands. The shop was launched in June 2009 and offers the most sought after pieces from more than 3,500 designers around the world.
Since November NJAL revolutionised the way retailing worked for emerging designers. Today all of our designers are able to sell on NJAL directly from their studio, empowering emerging talents to handle their own online sales without a middle man; their own profile sites became portfolio as well as online shop. On a recurring basis The online shop is headed by a leading industry figure or celebrity, resulting in a unique selection of items. Past curators were Lady Gaga, Lara Stone, Diane Pernet and many more.
Alongside new projects by prestigious brands like Chanel, Louboutin, Prada, Derek Lam and Issey Miyake, NJAL’s shop is an exciting and original nominee. As the ‘black sheep’ of the fashion industry, NJAL’s nomination for an award of this calibre is nothing less than a wonderful manifestation of the importance of individualism.
We are also proud to annouce NJAL designers Stefan and Saskia Diez are nominated in the Sustainable Category for their bag collection called Papier, which was selected by our curator Amanda Lepore in August 2009.
