Christian Westphal

...combining masculinity and harmony in every fit

Danish designer Christian Westphal has brought elegance, sophistication and detailed fit to menswear. His eponymous line blends Scandinavian design with classic European craftsmanship and tailoring. After studying fashion at the College of Danish Design in Kolding, Denmark, Westphal continued his studies at the prestigious Ecole de la Chambre Syndicale de la Couture Parisienne. Upon graduation, he began his career working with John Galliano at Christian Dior Couture in Paris and later held a position at the atelier flou of Emanuel Ungaro before assisting Delphine Murat. In 2007 Westphal launched his own collection of menswear. Designed with a refined audience in mind, the pieces in his collection find masculinity and harmony in each fit.

His collections bring together refined silhouettes and modern luxury while keeping in mind the rules of couture.
His first womenswear is about the cut: The butchers cut, the surgeons cut and the tailors cut and consists of geometric, collaged, stiff yet rounded, and composed of zones of matte and shine, with cashmere dimpled to look like industrial foam and shaved fur, severely asymmetrical silk dresses for women and oh-so-difficult contradictions.

The aesthetic, Westphal has launched with the aid of new machinery and traditional couture techniques, is recognizably Parisian, chic, optimistic, and of today. Freud's great unanswered question, "What does a woman want?" seems to be hanging over this round of collections, and it's already turned up some funny, off-beam stabbings around in the dark. Funny, that is, because isn't it obvious? What women want is a formal way of dressing that's also casual enough, new yet not ridiculously gimmicky, confident yet not egregiously aggressive, traditional in a comfortable way, yet also fresh in such a manner that women feel compelled to buy it.

Love now because…
You never know when it stops.

Creativity comes from…
Many shapes; often people, sometimes memories.

If I could…
I would live on a sunny island with beaches.

My dreams…
Are always fun. They consist mostly of adventures.

Pain comes from…
The heart.

Paris is…
Lifegiving and breathtaking.

I'm a perfectionist…
To the fingers – it is necessary in fashion.

I tried to live…
Simple – it makes my life more extraordinary.

Incompetence is…
Not an option.

I love getting older…
Because of the overwiew.
