Charlie May

...why can’t my mind be amazing when I go to sleep?

Charlie May is a young British womenswear designer, currently working and living in London. She graduated from UWE, Bristol in 2010 before moving to London to work for designers Louise Goldin and Thomas Tait. Born in Devon, in the south of England, Charlie was raised on a farm and spent her whole childhood in the same family home. This has influenced her to draw inspiration from her surroundings and background, which lead her to the signature minimalist, androgynous style she has become known for.

Nothing inspires me like...
A trip back home to Devon. I grew up on a farm in the countryside and I love going back to visit; roaming around the woods, going to the beach and exploring my surroundings.

I hope…
To see my brand evolve over the next few years into something really amazing. It has come so far in one year and the next step is to see people wearing and loving it.

Cultural influences…
I’m hugely inspired by Belgium as a country and by its designers. I’m a huge fan of Ann Demeulemeester and Haider Ackermann, I think their work is so moving. I also love visiting Brussels and Antwerp and go twice a year.

I got where I am...
Today by hard work and not giving up. I understand that it takes a long time to build a brand and I’m willing to let this run its course.

Fashion can sometimes...
Be uninspiring. I think you have a business mind as well as a creative one, which is hard to balance. I wish I could just be creative all the time but then that wouldn’t make a good business!

I Dance like…
Nobody’s watching, except for when they do watch and it’s an awkward experience for everyone.

Cake makes me…
Happy. I have quite a big sweet tooth and have to steer myself away from all the delicious London cake shops. My favourite cupcake is Red Velvet from Violets in East London.

If I could…
Go anywhere right now, I would go to the Indian ocean and dive off the coral reefs. Nothing makes me happier than when I’m swimming in the sea, especially when it’s hot and tropical!

I have never…
Travelled further North than London. This is something I’m planning to change, as there are so many beautiful places to visit. I guess the promise of a warmer climate is too tempting sometimes.

I once thought…
My nursery school teacher was Chris Rea. He had a gravely voice and I always thought they were the same person.

My dreams are…
Pretty lame. My boyfriend has amazing flying dreams and I dream a lot about everyday stuff. Why can’t my mind be amazing when I go to sleep?

Studios make me…
Inspired. I love seeing photos inside someone’s studio, all messy with trinkets and scraps lying everywhere. Right now my studio is in my flat in London so it’s not too crazy. Looking forward to moving in a few months to somewhere larger!

My mum...
Is my best friend. We are pretty much the same person and I wish we could hang out together more often. She also has a great business mind and helps me out a lot!

I like making...
Clothes, obviously, but I’m also interested in designing accessories, mainly shoes and jewellery. There should be some exciting collaborations in the pipeline for SS13!

I wouldn't want...
To live in London forever. I’d love to travel and eventually live back in the countryside. There are so many people in London and I miss looking at a landscape and not seeing a single person in it.
