Aptform

...form follows function

Michail Gkinis' background in fashion started at an early age. He grew up in an environment surrounded by textiles and the creative sound of sewing machines. His mother and sister produce made-to-order garments for private customers. While studying for his BA in Menswear at London College of Fashion, he learned the skills of tailoring. During his studies he completed an internship with ISSEY MIYAKE company in Tokyo Japan. It was a stepping stone in his life. Since 2006 Michail has been based in Tokyo. Fascinated by the Japanese textiles and the subtle Japanese craftsmanship he set up his label, aptform, in Tokyo 2008. Aptform is the idea that contemporary clothing is meaningful in terms of construction and sensitive in their cut and texture.

The fusion of Greece and Japan creates a unique Eurasian design. Inspired by the industrial and natural environment, Aptform uses high quality Japanese textiles and updates traditional techniques of making. Michail's admiration for the Bauhaus movement and its principles, specifically the idea that "form follows function", is aptform's raison d’être as a pursuit in creating meaningful clothes that explore the passageways between communication, design and nature, not only in substance but as a purpose for life. The engine of inspiration that breathes life into the idea that is aptform can be seen as the amalgamation of practices that range from industrial to natural, used as a language to express awareness about the modern social environment through the medium of clothing.

Nothing inspires me like…
The fusion of the industrial and natural environment I live in. The modern architecture of the city, the rusty textures of the walls, the sound of the rain, the silence between the space all these elements made me realize the importance of my creation.

I hope…
That everybody will soon understand that we are one. The actions we take effect ourselves and others in the same way.

Cultural influences…
Are my beautiful journey in creation. I am originally Greek and was educated in London. I always remind myself to have the desire to experience the opposite and the unknown. It all makes sense now being in Tokyo and expressing all these influences within my design.

I got where I am...
By thinking on a big scale, believing in myself even in the hardest times and acting sharply without letting the time fly by. Timing is very important in our lives as the best moment you live is now.

Fashion can sometimes...
Create unbalanced feelings. It can make you sad or give you an ecstatic moment of satisfaction. I love that this contrast gives me the most energy to continue.

I sense…
The power and the beauty of nature more and more in everyday life. All my textures are inspired by this feeling.

Did you know…
That I won the Tokyo New Designers Fashion Grand Prix in 2011? It is a great honour to receive the governor's price. It made me feel very proud.

Faith in…
Yourself is my motivational tool in life. Keeping that in mind can make you stronger so you can achieve your goals.

Creativity comes from…
Unexpected places and definitely from the environment I live in. The texture of the city, the shapes of the buildings and the sound of the rain. Those elements are my inspirational engine that fuels me with energy in every collection.

Love is…
The most complete emotional feeling. I wish everyone could live with love for themselves and for others.

My dreams are...
Always positive. I believe in making your dreams come true.

I live east…
Of the world because of fate. After moving to Tokyo, I realised the purpose of my being here. It has to do with my identity, my soul, and my attitude in life. It definitely effects my creation process and I really enjoy it.

There's a new...
Idea coming whenever you feel free.

I like making...
Clothes to communicate with people. Is a great reward when people tell you that when wearing your jacket or your coat, their attitude and behaviour become more happy and confident.

I love getting older...
And wiser. Life is a unique experience and the more you understand, it the more you enjoy it.
