Andraya Farrag

...divided between contrasting cultures

Andraya Farrag is a recent graduate from Central Saint Martins where she received a First Class BA Hons in Fashion Design with Marketing. Her BA collection was selected to be showcased at the Central Saint Martins BA Press Show 2011 and received a lot of online attention and photo shoot requests from Bullet, AnOther and Dazed and Confused magazines. The feminine but hard edged collection looked at the contrast of Andraya's culture. Her father is Egyptian and her mother is from England where Andraya was born and bred. The collection portrays her struggle with feeling stuck in the middle of two polar ideals. With culture aside it also touched upon a woman's battle against solitude. Fabrics such as vintage lace, tulle chiffon were contrasted with leather and chain mail. The Fashion Design with Marketing (FDM) BA involved every aspect of creating a collection and a brand. Other than the research, design, pattern cutting and production the FDM students have to build themselves a brand by doing market research, customer analysis and making promotional materials. Andraya produced a promotional film, photo shoots, look books, shoes, chain mail jewellery and a leather ipad case. Andraya also gained in-depth experience into the industry from her placement year where she interned at Matthew Williamson in London and Edun and Marchesa in New York. Andraya intends to continue designing but would like to also gain further experience in the fashion industry.

Nothing inspires me like…
Music and film. On rainy days I spend hours finding new music on YouTube and SoundCloud or watch new and classic films. I love the fashion in some of the classics.

I hope…
To be successful and happy in my career and to become well known in the industry as well as eventually having a family.

Cultural influences…
Are undoubtedly important in my graduate collection. I am not sure if I will focus on my personal culture too much in my future collections as I like to try new things. Other cultural influences such as vintage clothing, art and music are probably what I am most influenced by.

I got where I am...
Thanks to the support of my parents. They were shocked when I decided to study fashion instead of medicine but they always believed in me. I am also very hard working and determined. To get through Central Saint Martins’ final year, the best tip is to keep smiling and never to dwell on the mistakes!

Love now because…
Why wait until later?

Faith in…
Yourself and in the people around you is very important. I struggled to believe in myself for a while and as soon as I did, things started falling into place.

If I could…
Have any super power I would teleport! During my placements and final year it would have been very helpful!!

I have never…
Worked as hard as I have this year. When you begin to see that the effort pays off it drives you to push yourself even further.

My dreams are…
To be successful in fashion, continue to be happy and to eventually see the world.

NYC is…
My home away from home. I lived there during my placement year and met amazing people and experienced new exciting places. I also went to school in Dubai for a couple of years so I am becoming very comfortable with moving to new countries.

My goal…
Is to eventually visit India, Argentina and Mexico and maybe pick up a recipe or two!

The earliest memory...
I have is dressing up as a Spanish flamenco dancer for my fancy dress party. I was covered in ruffles and red lipstick. Maybe that is where it all began!?

My mum...
And dad are my heroes. They have been incredibly supportive of all of my decisions.

I like making…
Cages! I would have made my leather cages over and over again if I’d had time. After so many experiments of different techniques and the accuracy and time needed to make it work, I felt a great sense of achievement when I had finished one. Punching the holes and hammering the rivets together was also surprisingly satisfying. Although I imagine my neighbours must have hated me!
