AFSHIN FEIZ

...accentuating the beauty and hiding the flaws of the body

British designer Afshin Feiz attended the avant-garde fashion school, Studio Berçot, in Paris. He grew up in England where he attended Cranleigh School in Surrey, and then in Vancouver BC, Canada. He studied French Literature at Reed College in Portland, Oregon, in the United States before moving to Paris. To add a final international touch to his background, he showed his collections in New York during the Olympus Fashion Week until his Spring 2008 Collection when he started showing at London Fashion Week. He is now based in London once again. Feiz had work experience at Thierry Mugler and John Galliano after school before moving on to Christian Lacroix Haute Couture, where he feels he benefited largely from Lacroix’s extensive knowledge and personal culture. Next came a year as Director of The Design Studio at Gilles Rosier before ending up three years at Nina Ricci as the First Assistant Designer for the main line and Coordinator of all of the licences. Feiz’s dream to start a line under his own name became a reality in 2004. The Afshin Feiz brand has rapidly built up a solid reputation and is sold in Asia, Europe and North America. His aesthetic adheres to the idea of women that like to be beautiful and feminine, sexy yet not vulgar. His flirtatious diaphanous dresses and blouses are mixed with perfectly cut tailoring that creates a chemistry between the masculine and feminine that focuses on the latter. His curved seaming makes the clothes fit perfectly, accentuating the beauty and hiding the flaws of the body. Inspiration comes from love, nature and spirituality-related themes. From his first ever collection for Spring/Summer 2005, named Art As Flirtation Ad Surrender was inspired by 13th Century Persian Poet Rumi whose references to butterflies and candles were synonymous to lovers and their beloved. The quest for love despite its dangers. To his last collection for Spring 2009, Sometimes You Just Have To Let Go, inspired by Buddha’s Silent Sermon where he finds beauty and meaning in the simplicity of a flower. Collaborations have come in the form of his Spring/Summer 2005 Catalogue being shot by his friend, rockstar/photographer Bryan Adams, his Autumn/Winter 2005 Show Invitation being illustrated by Psychedelic Furs frontman Richard Butler, and a song being written and recorded for that same show by LA music producer (for Alanis Morrisette, Elvis Costelloe and The Red Hot Chili Peppers), Jimmy Boyle. The legendary soul band The Brand New Heavies performed at his Spring 2007 show in New York. Afshin Feiz has dressed many celebrities from Katie Holmes, Paris Hilton, Elizabeth Hurley, Julia Stiles to Girls Aloud.

Nothing inspires me like…
Love in all its forms and meanings, as seen through poetry or literature or some sort of symbolism. Also the idea of reinventing oneself and the concepts of renewal and rebirth.

I hope…
That people realise that all forms of life are equal and that bad treatment of animals, in this case for fashion reasons such as the use for their fur, is totally unacceptable.

Cultural influences…
I am not specifically influenced on a regular basis by one culture, but because of my international background, my experiences in varying cultures find their way into my work. One of my favourite collections, however, was specifically influenced by Aztec culture.

I got where I am...
Because of very hard work and belief that I have no choice but to succeed and because I love to express what I feel in some creative form.

Fashion can sometimes...
Be unfair. This is probably true of many businesses but from my experience, there are many people in fashion that do not deserve to be where they are. They just slept with, or did a line of coke with, the right person. There are many major talents that are overlooked in favour of less deserving ones.

I scream when…
I see people, particularly in fashion, act like sheep and decide to like something or someone because everyone else does. Think for yourselves, you may realise that your true opinion actually has some value, even if it goes against the crowd.

Love now because…
It is the best feeling in the world and holding out because of having been hurt in the past just makes you miss out on so many great experiences.

I dance like…
Nobody is watching.

If I could…
Spend a day with Tom Ford or Stella McCartney, I would be very happy. I would love to speak to them about fashion and exchange thoughts on not only fashion itself but the fashion world and their attitudes on a daily basis during their respective careers. I respect them both very much.

Love is…
The single most important thing that exists besides good health.

My future is…
Open to so many possibilities. I do not believe in getting stuck in one way of living or one path in life and accepting that that’s my life forever. Life has far too much to offer to deny oneself new experiences.

Pain comes from…
Looking at people who do not understand their own bodies and so do not dress in appropriate ways to better the way they appear. Well that and listening to George Bush…!!

My goal…
Is to make beautiful clothes that enhance a woman’s appearance rather than give her a shield to hide behind. My woman is not afraid to look pretty and feminine.

My mum...
Has been my rock and my support throughout my life and career. I have always been able to depend on her and she has always believed in what I do. I am very lucky.
