CATERINADORIGO

This project starts with a story about my great-grandmother-a spiritualist/medium. From this starting point a hypothetical "world" was defined by creating an archive of material of her presumed possessions: the study of night-shirts, glasses, lace, chandeliers from Villa Utopia. These possessions become a Family Portrait: objects of different origin and physicality. The essence of the past is reminiscent in this family portrait, they are spectres in a photograph. The Spirit, with which this relative communicated, is implicated in a form of sleep defined as eternal. This practice requires specific and appropriate clothing: night gowns, dressing for sleep. The shroud is the nightgown of the spectrum, it is his white sheet, it is her veil. A link is formed, the funeral veil of the widow, the veil covering the face of the medium, the veil that covers each item of the entire collection. What is there in "afterlife"? What lies “beneath” the veil? The Veil Lifted: the raising of the veil not only involves the definition of the identity of the spectrum, but whether it is true or false. False presence becomes Fake Lace under the veil, the false prints become a negative motif ; tone on tone, Fake buttons, the Fake sleep in which the Ghost participates. Whether they can be said to be true or false: "Fake diamonds take nothing fromthe value of real diamonds, artificial flowers do notPrevent there being natural flowers," Allan Kardec.
