ATHENAPROCOPIOU
About the Designer
Athena is based in London, United Kingdom. She studied at Central Saint Martins. Her collections are produced in United Kingdom.
Athena Procopiou presents her debut scarf collection for AW 2010-2011 entitled Cranes.
Athena wanted to illustrate that something so "hard" could also be beautiful using strong and graphic elements like cranes but giving them an aesthetic beauty and transfer that interpretation onto soft luxurious fabric. The idea of hard subject matter translated to become soft and beautiful was also inspired by the photography of Richard De Tscharner, as was her choice of the monochrome palette.
“London is very urban and almost "ugly" to me. It's dark, it's grey, it is old and it is reflective in a Londoner’s style. The Battersea Power Station is always inspiring and the cranes by The Thames are beautiful”.
“I know lots of people like black and I wanted to design something to go with their style. I wanted something edgy, rock but on a beautiful fabric”.
Athena chose luxury silks and wools offering function and indulgence, longevity and beauty.
Athena designs for rock-chicks / rock-boys and the rock attitude in general. A love for grunge and the sub-cultural icons such as Kurt Cobain is always kept in mind.
“I like dark. I like "depressed". I like vampires. I'm not a minimalist. I like busy prints for a messy mind”.
