The starting point for the collection was one aspect of the Paul Gauguin's painting Tehamana Has Many Ancestors. The symbols reminiscent of ancient rock carvings, like a mysterious sign language spoken by our ancestors. Held within these crude primitive shapes is what remains of generations long gone, the rich heritage of life. Basic shapes form garment patterns, there are no darts or pleats to fit the body instead silhouette is created by draping and moulding fabric. The other major influence on the collection was Sally Mann. Her photographs depicting decay and decomposition set the mood, colour scheme and the choice of materials. Aged rusty metal, malted wool and burnt wood reflect on the theme. Each garment has its own reference. There is a coat inspired by the Hermann Hesse novel Narcissus and Goldmund comprising the images of a saint and a vagabond. The rusty cross on a washed wool jumper refers to a priest's dress and stands for faith and rebirth. Primordial yet timeless in its nature and feel the collection is an embodiment of a dark yet hopeful mood. Photography Sergey Krasyuk.
